Controlled vocabulary is expanded through six levels, following the popular "Letters and Sounds" phonics scheme from Phase 2 to Phase 4, building up from simple CVC words (level 1) to double letter sounds (level 2), two letter graphemes (level 3), adjacent consonants (level 4), two letter graphemes, and split long vowels (level 5) and alternative spellings (level 6).
